Frost resistant hand painted tiles are ideal for projects where decorative tile needs to perform outdoors, around water, or in freeze-thaw climates. Our lavastone and select porcelain options allow classic Italian, Mediterranean, Iznik, Portuguese, and custom patterns to be used in exterior applications where standard decorative ceramic tile may not be appropriate.

Learn More →Majolica Italian tiles have been the quintessential Italian styled tiles used for floor applications but of course they can also be used on walls as well. The use of different shapes creates a very unique look. We have several different options available for these applications including hand painted glazed porcelain, reinforced hand painted ceramic and glazed lavastone. All have various benefits and properties. Any of our Italian patterns can be painted on the lavastone tile to become a frost resistant tile.
These are suited for all over flooring applications. The tiles will typically be 3/8" thick and on an 8x8 tile.

So many of our clients in freeze thaw zones want that beautiful look of Italian, Iznik, or Portuguese tiles in their outside areas like they see in Florida and Southern California but are unable to find available options from the pool tiles available. We can provide you decorative tiles which are frost resistant, chemical resistant and appropriate for both pool and water features in freeze thaw zones. These tiles are produced on a lava stone base and are 1 cm thick. Various sizes are available. These decorative tiles are all produced to order so you need to allow at least 12-14 weeks for your order, although smaller orders can be sometimes be produced in less time for an additional cost if we airfreight it direct from the factory. You can provide a design motif or select from any of our motifs that you see on our site. Each project will be priced depending on the quantities as all of these tiles are not stocked and made to order.

Not every hand painted tile is suitable for outdoor or freeze-thaw applications. The right material depends on the installation location, traffic level, water exposure, climate, and whether the tile will be used on a floor, wall, pool, fountain, or stair riser.

Traditional hand painted ceramic tiles are not automatically frost resistant. For outdoor projects in freeze-thaw climates, we recommend reviewing lavastone or select glazed porcelain options instead of standard decorative ceramic.
